AH podcast: Don Patterson talks about Hayden Fry and about facing Northwestern on Saturday
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Don Patterson spent this past weekend in Denton, Texas where he attended a ceremony in honor of Hayden Fry.
The University of North Texas paid tribute to Fry by holding a reunion and tailgate in his honor. A private dinner reception was held Friday night for Fry, who led North Texas from 1973-1978. He won 40 games in that span and had four straight winning seasons to round out the era, including a 10-win season and a national ranking in 1977.
Fry left UNT to become head coach at Iowa, where he led the Hawkeyes to three Big 10 titles. After his retirement, Fry was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. Fry was honored at halftime of the North Texas-UTSA game, along with many of his former players.
Patterson coached under Fry for one season at North Texas in 1978 before joining him at Iowa, where he coached under Fry for 20 seasons.
Patterson also talked about the Iowa football team coming off its bye week and preparing to face Northwestern on Saturday in Evanston, Ill.
His interview lasted for over 30 minutes, and like always, Patterson gave plenty of insight.
