AH podcast: Don Patterson breaks down the beat-down in Mad Town
IOWA CITY, Iowa – It's Monday and that means another session with Don Patterson breaking down the Iowa football team's game from this past weekend.
And while some fans probably want to forget about Iowa's 38-14 loss to Wisconsin this past Saturday in Madison, Wis., Patterson spent about 30 minutes explaining what went wrong in his opinion.
Hayden Fry's former offensive coordinator questioned why Iowa didn't use more play-action passing, especially early in the game before it was apparent that Iowa couldn't run the ball.
Wisconsin held Iowa to just 66 total yards, which was the lowest output in 19 seasons under head coach Kirk Ferentz, the fewest yards that Wisconsin has allowed to a Big Ten opponent and Iowa's lowest offensive output since 1944.
The Iowa defense performed well enough to keep the game competitive for a while thanks mostly to Josh Jackson's two pick sixes. Iowa's junior cornerback leads the nation with seven interceptions and has five in the past two games. He also had 29 more return yards (95) on his two interceptions than Iowa had total yards.
Patterson also tallked about the importance of moving on from the Wisconsin loss and getting ready for the home finale against a much improved Purdue squad under first-year coach Jeff Brohm. Iowa (6-4) will host the 4-6 Boilermakers on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Knnick Stadium before closing the regular season on Black Friday at Nebraska.
Iowa will honor its senior class before the game on Saturday, and Patterson thinks that will give the Hawkeyes a big emotional edge.
Patterson also thinks that Iowa has a good chance of finishing the regular season with an 8-4 record despite the lopsided loss at Wisconsin.
He always provides unique insight based on his years of coaching experience and we at AllHawkeyes.com appreciate his input each Monday.
