IOWA CITY, Iowa – The last time the Iowa football team got a recruit from Edwardsville, Ill. it turned out pretty well.
Iowa is hoping its success in recruiting former five-star defensive end A.J. Epenesa helps in drawing 2019 athlete Kendall Abdur-Rahman to Iowa City.
Abdur-Rahman received a scholarship offer from Iowa on Wednesday and was so intrigued that he has already made plans to visit Iowa on Dec. 17.
“It feels great,” Abdur-Rahman said. “It was a great way to end my night. I was super excited.”
Abdur-Rahman had the opportunity to play with Epenesa last season.
The 6-foot-5, 270-pound Epenesa has told Abdur-Rahman nothing but good things about his experience so far at Iowa.
“He said he loves the bond with his teammates,” Abdur-Rahman said. “He said they’re all a big family. He likes the work ethic that the coaches put in and the bonds that the coaches have the players. He said it’s a great fit for him and he loves it there.”
Abdur-Rahman also has an offer from Iowa State, which he plans to visit on Dec. 16, the day before visiting Iowa.
The 6-foot, 175-pound Abdur-Rahman said he looks forward to learning all that he can about the school Epenesa has raved about during his Iowa visit.
“(I just want to learn) what the environment is like and what the school is like,” Abdur-Rahman said. “Also how the coaches are and how the players work and coaches work and to see if it’s the best fit for me.”
Abdur-Rahman also said the Iowa coaches are not recruiting him at a specific position yet and expect him to play either receiver or defensive back in college.
He also said he has no timetable set for a decision.
Iowa currently has four players committed to its 2019 recruiting class.
