IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa defensive coordinator Phil Parker has established a reputation for sending defensive backs to the NFL.

That reputation is not lost on four-star 2019 defensive back Marquez Beason, who received a scholarship offer from Iowa on Wednesday.

“It means a lot,” Beason said. “Especially since they send so many defensive backs to the NFL. So that shows that they’re taking guys with potential and sending them to the league.”

The 5-foot-11, 175-pound Beason already has dozens of offers including Georgia, Florida, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Wisconsin, but Parker’s penchant for developing professional-caliber defensive backs stands out to Beason.

“That’s a really big factor because it shows that he’s doing a good job with his defensive backs putting them in a position to be successful,” Beason said.

Beason has taken notice of fellow Dallas-area native and Iowa all-American Josh Jackson.

Jackson recently opted to forgo his senior season at Iowa to enter the NFL Draft.

“I watched him a lot,” Beason said. “Josh Jackson is a great cornerback. He’s very technical, he’s very athletic. He just abuses receivers, he abuses quarterbacks and he abuses offenses with his technique and athleticism.”

Despite the decisions he has to make with a list that totals over 30 scholarship offers, Beason is trying to narrow things down as soon as possible.

“I’m trying to take all of my officials during the spring so I can hopefully commit during the summer or sometime before my senior season,” Beason said.

Iowa currently has four players committed to its 2019 recruiting class.
