IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa assistant wrestling coach Terry Brands and former Hawkeye all-American Thomas Gilman met with the media on Tuesday to discuss the 2018 World Cup being held at Carver-Hawkeye Arena April 7-8.

It will be the first time that Carver-Hawkeye Arena has hosted the World Cup.

The arena had previously hosted the 2012 Olympic team trials and the 2016 Olympic team trials

ABOUT THE WORLD CUP

• The 2018 World Cup in Iowa City, Iowa, is April 7-8 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
• The World Cup is an international dual tournament featuring eight of the top men’s freestyle wrestling teams in the world. Azerbaijan, Cuba, Georgia, Iran, Japan, Kazakhstan, and Russia have been invited to attend.
• The United States is the defending World Champions following a 2017 World Championship performance in Paris that included six total medals – two gold, two silver, and two bronze.
• University of Iowa All-American Thomas Gilman is one of six medalists representing the United States at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Gilman earned a silver medal at the 2017 World Championships in Paris, France. Other Team USA medalists include Jordan Burroughs (gold), Kyle Snyder (gold), James Green (silver), J’den Cox (bronze), and Nick Gwiazdowski (bronze). Team USA wrestlers have a combined 15 world and Olympic Medals.
• Carver-Hawkeye Arena is hosting the World Cup for the first time. The arena hosted the record-setting 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials and the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. It has been the site of many of the most important wrestling events in American wrestling history, and serves as the home venue for the University of Iowa wrestling team, which annually leads the NCAA in attendance.
• 7G Distributing headlines an outdoor “Gable’s Garden” that includes non-alcoholic beverages, beer, wine, and food from local vendors. “Gable’s Garden” is open Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. outside the North Entrance of Carver-Hawkeye Arena, near the Dan Gable statue.

Admission to “Gable’s Garden” is included with the purchase of a World Cup ticket. Fans will be able to purchase food and beverages at “Gable’s Garden” and take those items into the arena.
