AH TV: Iowa players discuss final spring practice on Friday
By Tyler Devine
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa fans are running out of things to complain about.
Scratch one more thing off the list after Iowa announced that the water tower by the northeast corner of Kinnick Stadium will don a Tigerhawk logo come this fall.
Fans have been pleading for years for Iowa to paint the all white water tower that overlooks the stadium.
The project is scheduled for completion prior to the Sept. 1 home opener against Northern Illinois.
In other news, Iowa scrimmaged for approximately 90 minutes in front of a crowd of 9,300 in its first action game-like action of 2018.
Iowa's defense got the better of its offense for most of the night, allowing just one touchdown and forcing several turnovers, including two by junior safety Amani Hooker.
"I think Hooker's got a lot of skill," Senior safety Jake Gervase said. "He's a good leader, he brings great energy and I think you haven't seen his best yet and he's going to be a weapon for us next fall."
Because of the play of Iowa's defense, junior quarterback Nate Stanley hardly looked like the same quarterback that threw for 2,437 yards and 26 touchdowns last season.
Luckily for Stanley, there is still plenty of time to get tighten things up.
"Obviously there are some throws I want back," Stanley said. "Some tipped balls I would like to throw a little bit differently. Overall I think we came out and had a good day and put together a really good practice."
Injury report: Iowa was without three defensive starters for its final spring practice. Senior defensive end Parker Hesse and junior defensive end Matt Nelson were expected to miss the practice, while it was announced on Friday that senior linebacker Aaron Mends is expected to miss extended time with a serious knee injury.
Head coach Kirk Ferentz said Mends was doubtful to return this season.
Also held out of practice due to injury were junior offensive lineman Levi Pauslen and junior defensive back Wes Dvorak.
Senior receiver Nick Easley dressed for practice but did not participate due to what Ferentz described as non-serious soft tissue injury.
