IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Iowa football team already has eight players committed to its 2019 recruiting class, but none of them play quarterback

Iowa also has only three quarterbacks on scholarship, but steps are being taken to strengthen the position.

Iowa has recently made scholarship offers to several quarterbacks in the 2019 class, including three-star prospect Connor Bazelak, who was offered this past Sunday.

“I was definitely excited because I really liked it there last summer and their offense fits my style,” Bazelak said. “The facilities and the campus (really stood out).

“They are definitely high on my list.”

A decision from the 6-foot-4, 205-pound Bazelak could come soon after he sifts through his extensive offer list and takes some more visits.

“I’m not sure,” Bazelak said. “I’m hoping to narrow things down later in May to about three to four schools that I want to visit in the beginning of June and then have a decision mid-June.”

A native of Dayton, Ohio, Bazelak already has started to develop a relationship with Iowa quarterbacks coach Ken O’ Keefe.

“I’ve talked to him twice in person,” Bazelak said. “He just said that he likes me and wants me to be a Hawkeye.”

In addition to Iowa, Bazelak also has scholarship offers from Boston College, Duke, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Pittsburgh, Purdue, Rutgers, Vanderbilt and West Virginia.

Iowa already has missed on two quarterbacks targets in the 2019 class, including four-star recruit and Council Bluffs native  Max Duggan, who committed to Texas Christian University in April.

Michigan native Sam Johnson also committed to Boston College last week after having trimmed his list to five schools that included Iowa.

Other 2019 quarterbacks who recently were offered by Iowa include Maverick McIvor and Jacob Clark, both of whom are from Texas, and Georgia native Zach Calzada.

Junior starter Nate Stanley, redshirt freshman Peyton Mansell and true freshman Spencer Petras are the three quarterbacks currently on scholarship for Iowa. The number was cut to three after Tyler Wiegers and Ryan Boyle both left the program this spring.

Wiegers will play for Eastern Michigan next season as a graduate student, while Boyle will do the same for Indiana State. Wiegers served as Stanley's backup last season.
