AH podcast: Fran McCaffery speaks passionately about his mission to raise money for cancer research
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Fran McCaffery's life mostly revolves around family, basketball and his ongoing mission with his wife, Margaret, to raise money for pediatric cancer research.
He addressed all three topiics during an emotional 40-minute interview as our guest on Friday's Allhawkeyes radio show on KCJJ radio.
McCaffery talked about his son's battle against cancer and about Patrick McCaffery's bond with Austin "Flash" Schroeder, who died from cancer in 2015. Patrick and Austin fought the disease together and became close friends and soul mates.
Patrick has since made a full recovery and will play basketball for his father at Iowa after he graduates from West High School next spring.
Fran McCaffery also updated the status of the Iowa basketball team, which will face Missouri in a closed scrimmage on Sunday at Quincy College in Quincy, Ill.
In addition to the podcast, there is also a video posted with Fran McCaffery talking to the media before Thursday's annual fundraiser for cancer research at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
We appreciate Fran for giving us the time to address three topics that mean so much to him.
This interview is definitely worth a listen. It might even bring you to tears.
