IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa Athletic Director Gary Barta didn't say what specifically led to Iowa volleyball coach Bond Shymansky being put on a 30-day administrative leave.

However, Barta said at a press conference on Monday that it was a "significant" violation that caused Shymansky to be disciplined.

“Clearly there is significant violations or we wouldn’t have brought in an outside group,” Barta said. “At this point, it would not yet be appropriate for me to share exactly what they are. Because we just notified the NCAA, we need to let them get in and see what we’ve learned so far and then let that go a few steps further before I can comment on exactly which violations they are.”

Shymansky grew up in Iowa City and has coached the Iowa volleyball team since 2014. He has led the once-struggling program to at least 15 victories in each of the past three seasons, including a 15-16 record this past season.

The team won 18 games in 2017, its most since 1994. Shymansky’s contract runs through the 2022 season and pays him a base salary of $215,000.

Shymansky, 47, also led Iowa to its highest ranked win in program history, defeating No. 6 Wisconsin in five sets inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena this past October.

Barta said Monday that a former player came forward with information about the violations. Barta didn't identify the former player or say what violations had occurred..

"I won’t talk specifically about what it was, but I am comfortable enough to say that everyone who works in college athletics is very familiar with this line that can’t be crossed,” he said, adding that the violations were not criminal in nature.

Iowa named assistant coach Vicki Brown as the interim head coach. Barta said the 30-day leave upon which Shymansky was placed is consistent with the coach’s contract, which requires a 30-day written notice if the university plans to terminate him for cause. Barta said he planned to decide on the coach’s future with the program soon.

Barta said Iowa learned of the allegations on May 1 and hired the New York-based Bond, Schoeneck & King law firm to investigate. He said the investigation found that no other Iowa staff members or players were involved in or aware of the violations.
