IOWA CITY, Iowa – The past and present of Iowa Hawkeye athletics were both featured during Wednesday’s edition of the Allhawkeyes radio show and podcast.

Iowa strength and conditioning coach Chris Doyle and former Hawkeye basketball star Fred Brown were on guests during the two-hour show.

Doyle’s 20-minute interview starts at the beginning of the show and he addresses multiple topics, including dealing with a global pandemic, the NFL Draft and life without Tom Brady as a life-long New England Patriots fan and native of Quincy, Mass.

Doyle has been Iowa’s strength coach throughout Kirk Ferentz’s 21-year reign as head coach and Doyle talked about how that continuity, culture and stability helps during surreal times like now.

Brown, meanwhile, joined us about 90-minutes into the podcast and then spent about 30 minutes reminiscing on his career as a Hawkeye, and in the NBA where he won a title in 1979 as a member of the Seattle SuperSonics.

Brown explained how he was given the nickname “Downtown Freddie Brown” and he talked about being a member of Ralph Miller’s legendary “Six-Pack” that won the 1970 Big Ten title, finishing 14-0 in conference play and averaging more than 100 points per game.

Brown also withstood the agony that came from looking back at Iowa’s stunning loss to Jacksonville in the 1970 NCAA Tournament, and he shared a great story about Pembrook Burrows III, whose tip-in the final seconds ended Iowa’s dreams of facing UCLA for the NCAA title.

Brown raved about his two years at Iowa, and he still keeps in touch with many of his former Iowa teammates, and with other friends from college.

In fact, Iowa City native Ken Grabinski is a close friend of Brown and helped to arrange the interview, which we greatly appreciate.

It truly was a pleasure speaking with the 71-year old Brown, who grew up in Milwaukee, Wis., and now lives in Seattle with his wife of 49 years.

Brown was referred to as a legend during the interview, but responded by saying:

“Enough with the legend crap, I’m just Fred.”

Brown said he is hunkered down in Seattle with his family and he called the COVID-19 pandemic scary.

Part of our motivation with the radio show is to create a diversion during these scary and uncertain times.
