IOWA CITY, Iowa – The seventh-ranked Iowa wrestling team begins its pursuit of its 24th NCAA wrestling title, and first since 2009-10, on Thursday in Cleveland, Ohio.
Head coach Tom Brands and select members of the wrestling team addressed the media on Monday while preparing for the tournament.
Iowa qualified nine wrestlers for the NCAA Championships when it finished fourth in the team standings during the Big Ten Championships last week.
Senior 149-pounder Brandon Sorensen is making his fourth appearnace at the NCAA Championships and is seeking to become Iowa’s 20th four-time All-American.
The second-ranked Sorensen, a native of Cedar Falls, Iowa, finished third nationally last season.
Iowa also has two freshman qualifiers in 125-pounder Spencer Lee and 165-pounder Alex Marinelli.
Lee, a native of Murrysville, Pa., is the No. 3 seed in his weight class while Marinelli, a native of Miamisburg, Ohio, is the No. 5 seed.
