Iowa defensive back Jack Koerner injured in boating accident in Missouri
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa defensive back Jack Koerner is listed in serious condition after being involved in a boating accident on Missouri’s Lake of the Ozarks Friday night.
The report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol said Koerner was transported to the hospital by EMS after two boats had collided.
Koerner reportedly was one of four passengers riding in a Sea Doo when it collided with a bigger boat.
Another passenger, West Des Moines native Cole Coffin, was airlifted to the hospital, according to the report.
The Iowa Sports Information Department issued a statement that described Koerner’s injuries as non-life threatening. The statement also sad that Koerner had completed the first week of voluntary workouts with his Hawkeye teammates and was at the Lake of the Ozarks with his father, Gary, for a father-son weekend along with other West Des Moines families.
Koerner, a 2017 graduate of West Des Moines Dowling, joined the Iowa program as a walk-on and was put on scholarship for the 2020 spring semester.
He earned the scholarship after having started 11 games at free safety for an Iowa team that finished 10-3 last season.
Koerner ranked second on the team with 81 total tackles and had a team-leading 49 solo stops.
The junior-to-be also twice has been named academic All-Big Ten.
