Ihmir Smith-Marsette suspended one game for drunken driving charge
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa senior receiver Ihmir-Smith-Marsette has been suspended for one game after being charged with drunken driving early Sunday morning in Iowa City.
Smith-Marsette will miss this coming Saturday’s game against Michigan State (1-1) at Kinnick Stadium.
The Newark, N.J. native was arrested at approximately 1:30 Sunday morning after being clocked at operating a 2017 Camaro at 74 miles per hour in a 30-mile speed zone in Iowa City, according to the Iowa City Police report.
“I was disappointed to learn that Ihmir Smith-Marsette made a number of dangerous and potentially harmful decisions early this morning,” Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said in a statement. “First and foremost, I am thankful no one was hurt.
“I spoke with Ihmir this morning, and he was apologetic and disappointed in himself. As a coach and parent, I understand the personal pain that comes with making these types of decisions. These situations can be defining moments for all students. It is my responsibility to hold our players accountable and help them learn and succeed.”
Smith-Marsette has 10 touchdowns in his career. He caught 44 passes for 722 yards as a junior.
If Ferentz opts to suspend Smith-Marsette for a second game, he would miss Iowa’s contest vs. Minnesota.
Iowa and Michigan State kick off at 12 p.m. on Saturday at Kinnick Stadium.
Smith-Marsette led Iowa with seven catches for 84 yards in this past Saturday’s 21-20 loss to Northwestern at Kinnick Stadium.
