The bad news is one of the Iowa wrestling team’s No. 1 seeds no longer has a shot at a national title.
Senior 165-pounder Alex Marinelli lost his quarterfinal matchup 3-1 to No. 8 seed Shane Griffith of Stanford in sudden victory.
The good news is Iowa still has five wrestlers competing in the semifinals and remains in first place in the team standings of the NCAA Championships in St. Louis, Missouri on Friday night.
The Hawkeyes head into the semifinals with 73.5 points, with Penn State in second place with 57.5.
Iowa is seeking its first national team title since 2010. Penn State has won eight of the last nine national championships.
Iowa’s No. 12 seed Max Murin also lost in sudden victory in his quarterfinal matchup against Oklahoma State No. 4 seed Boo Llewallen, and 197-pounder Jacob Warner fell to Oklahoma State’s A.J. Ferrari.
The only Hawkeye to have been eliminated from the tournament is sophomore 184-pounder Nelson Brands, who lost by major decision 15-4 to No. 22 seed Devin Kane of North Carolina.
125-pounder Spencer Lee, 141-pounder Jaydin Eierman and 174-pounder Michael Kemerer all scored bonus points in their matches to become four-time All-Americans.
