Iowa receiver Tyrone Tracy Jr. enters transfer portal
By Pat Harty
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Tyrone Tracy Jr. became the third Iowa receiver to enter the NCAA transfer portal since the start of the 2021 season.
New broke on Tuesday that Tracy had entered the transfer portal, but it came as no surprise since there had been rumors about him wanting to transfer for several weeks.
Big things were expected from Tracy on the field this season, but it just never materialized as he only had 15 catches for 106 yards and one touchdown during the regular season. He also lost his starting position to freshman Keagan Johnson late in the season, and he didn’t have a catch against Michigan in the Big Ten Championship game last Saturday in Indianapolis.
Tracy joins former Iowa receivers Quavon Matthews and Desmond Hutson in the transfer portal.
They are among at least five scholarship players for Iowa that have entered the transfer portal since the start of the 2021 season.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Deuce Hogan and sophomore tight end Josiah Miamen also have entered the portal.
Tracy was thought to be a star on the rise for the Hawkeyes when he caught 36 passes for 589 yards and three touchdowns as a redshirt freshman in 2019. His best game that season came at Wisconsin when he caught five passes for 130 yards, including a 75-yard touchdown.
His role was reduced during the shortened 2020-Covid season, and that served as motivation for Tracy heading into this season.
He was among three players picked to represent Iowa at Big Ten Media Day in July in his home state of Indiana.
However, Tracy’s role at receiver decreased during the course of the 2021 season.
He then showed his frustration on Twitter by comparing himself to a Swiss Army Knife that wasn’t being used properly.
“Why have a Swiss Army Knife and NOT use it to its full potential,” the tweet said.
The tweet was deleted shortly after being posted, but not before it was seen by numerous Iowa fans.
Tracy has yet to comment on his decision to transfer, or made it official by posting an update on social media.
Hogan took several days before he confirmed his decision to transfer on Twitter.
Tracy will be eligible to play next season under the new transfer rules.
Tracy had at least 15 scholarship offers coming out of high school as a three-star recruit. He picked Iowa over Louisville and Northwestern.
