Former Iowa quarterback Deuce Hogan will transfer to Kentucky
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Former Iowa quarterback Deuce Hogan has found a new team, and it’s the one that just defeated his former team in the Citrus Bowl this past New Year’s Day.
Hogan appears to have confirmed a report that he would transfer to Kentucky by posting on Twitter the words Lexington, Kentucky #BBN.
Kentucky defeated Iowa 20-17 in the Citrus Bowl and is coached by former Iowa defensive back Mark Stoops.
Hogan spent two seasons at Iowa and appeared in just one game this past season as a redshirt freshman. He completed his only pass attempt for two yards.
He was redshirted as a true freshman in 2020.
Hogan came to Iowa as a heralded 4-star recruit from Texas.
He was the first player to commit to Iowa’s 2020 recruiting class and he helped to recruit other players to the class.
That made Hogan popular with Iowa fans, and on social media, and it fueled the hype and expectations for fans.
But to the dismay of some fans, Hogan remained buried on the depth, never climbing to higher than third on the depth chart.
Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz helped to expedite Hogan’s departure, according to Hogan’s mother, when he joked about the possibility of having to play Hogan against Nebraska in the regular-season finale.
Iowa’s top two quarterbacks, Spencer Petras and Alex Padilla, had struggled with the flu earlier in the week and there was concern that one or both of them would be unavailable for the Nebraska game.
“If it was Deuce, with all due respect to Deuce, I might have stayed in Iowa City,” Ferentz said in the post-game press conference after Iowa’s 28-21 victory over Nebraska.
Hogan’s mother, Amy Hogan, lashed out on Facebook and blasted Kirk Ferentz for his comment about her son.
“Deuce did not leave Iowa because of playing time,” Amy Hogan wrote. “The head coach slandered him in a press conference.”
Hogan left the team just days after the Nebraska game and did not participate in any bowl preparation.
Ferentz apologized for his comment, which was an poorly executed attempt at humor, and he regretted mentioning Hogan’s name.
It’s being reported that Hogan will join Kentucky as a walk-on.
Will Levis is expected to return for his senior season as Kentucky’s starting quarterback. He started all 13 games for Kentucky this past season after having transferred from Penn State.
