Iowa DB recruit from Chicago described as “physical, tough, smart with great first step”

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Earlier this week, Chicago defensive back John Nestor became the seventh player to commit to the Iowa football team’s 2023 recruiting class.
Veteran recruiting analyst Tom Lemming, who lives in the Chicago area, and who is quite familiar with Nestor, believes that Iowa has landed a good one.
“I really like him,” Lemming said in a text message. “Physical, tough, and smart with a great first step.
“Very athletic and cerebral.”
The 6-foot-1, 190-pound all-Chicago Catholic League selection is the first defensive back to join Iowa’s 2023 class.
Fellow 2023 commit Alex Mota, who is from Marion, Iowa, also plays defensive back, but he is expected to start his career at receiver for Iowa.
Nestor announced his decision on social media following visits to Iowa and Iowa State this past weekend.
Nestor thanked his family, his coaches at Marist and his coaches at Win Performance for helping to build him into a Division I prospect.
He reportedly has at least 14 scholarship offers from Football Bowl Subdivision programs.
“I am thrilled to announce that I have verbally committed to continue my academic and football career at the University of Iowa,” Nestor said on Twitter. Thank you to everyone who has believed in me. Go Hawkeyes!”
Nestor helped Marist reach the semifinals of the Illinois Class 8A playoffs last season, recording 63 tackles, including 43 solo stops. He also intercepted four passes, forced three fumbles and had one sack as a junior.
Nestor played cornerback last fall at Marist but was recruited to play safety by Iowa.
He is ranked by both Rivals and 247Sports as a three-star prospect on a five-star scale.
Iowa’s 2023 recruiting class is currently ranked 10th nationally by Rivals.
