Reed Rus Returns to Visit Iowa Football
'23 South Dakota Athlete Hails from Chad Greenway's High School
More than two decades ago, Iowa Football assistant Reese Morgan traveled to South Dakota and found a hidden gem. The longtime coach had a knack for finding talent before retiring.
Few shined as bright as did linebacker Chad Greenway, who went on to a successful career with the Minnesota Vikings after starring with the Hawkeyes. Iowa has returned to his hometown of Mt.Vernon, SD, in recruiting 2023 Athlete Reed Rus, who visited the Hawkeyes on Thursday.
“Iowa is very popular at home. Ever since Chad got to play there and had such a great career the Hawkeyes have always been special in our hometown. It has always been a goal of mine to be recruited by the Iowa Hawkeyes. For it to come true has been pretty special,” Rus told HF.
Rus visited Iowa for a game in November. He looked around a little more this week.
“I really like how everything for football is all in one building. That is one of my favorite parts of campus,” he said.
For now, Iowa sees the versatile Rus as a linebacker. Like Greenway, he plays that position and quarterback for Mt. Vernon/Plankinton High. He also wears the same No. 18 as Greenway.
Assistant LeVar Woods has been leading the Hawkeyes recruitment of Rus. Linebacker coach Seth Wallace also has been involved in the process.
“I have a good relationship with LeVar. He has been very personable and has made my recruitment very enjoyable. I really like the way Seth coaches. He is very straight to the point, and I like that. That is how I have been coached. I am confident that the coaches will place me at whichever position will help me be the best I can be and help the team,” he said.
“I feel like they will fit me into their scheme however it will benefit the team the best.”
Iowa is evaluating Rus in determining if it will offer. He’s ready to give the staff no choice but to do so.
“Coming back to camp in the summer will be a huge part of my recruitment” Rus said. “I love working hard and bringing a lot of energy, and that is what Iowa football is all about.”
Rus wants to be an orthodontist
“I will go into pre-dentistry. I’d like to learn more about Iowa away from football,” he said.
The South Dakota High School Football Coaches Association named Rus to its all-state team in the fall.
