2024 Monticello athlete Preston Ries commits to Iowa football team
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa State was the first school to offer Preston Ries a football scholarship, but in this case, being first didn’t give the Cyclones an edge.
Ries, a 2024 athlete from Monticello , announced his commitment to Iowa Saturday morning on Twitter,
He picked the Hawkeyes over scholarship offers from Iowa State and Nebraska, while Wisconsin was showing interest.
Iowa State offered Ries a scholarhip on Jan. 14, while Iowa offered him on April 16.
Ries also visited both schools three times before commiting to Iowa.
Ries is the fourth player to commit to Iowa’s 2024 class and his commitment came barely two weeks after Williamsburg native Derek Weisskopf committed to Iowa on April 20th.
Ries and Weisskopf are both listes as athletes by Rivals, but are expected to play linebacker at Iowa.
The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Ries is a four-sport star at Monticello where in addition to football, he also excels in basketball, baseball and track and field.
As a sophomore this past season, Ries threw for 2,594 yards and 20 touchdowns, and ran for 1,343 yards on 207 carries with 14 touchdowns at quarterback. On defense, Ries had 68.5 tackles and 18 tackles for a loss.
In basketball, Ries averaged 18.1 points and seven rebounds while leading the Panthers to the Class 2A semifinals on the hardwood.
Ries is ranked as a 3-star recruit in football by Rivals.
