IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa baseball team was defeated 7-4 on Saturday evening at Duane Banks Field.

The Hawkeyes fell behind early going down 3-0 before cutting the lead to 3-1 in the sixth. A three-run home run by Brennen Dorighi gave the Hawkeyes a 4-3 lead before Maryland scored three runs in the eighth and one in the ninth to retake the lead for good.

“Tough loss today,” said head coach Rick Heller. “Especially when you fight back and take the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Went out and gave a bunch of free bases and gave up the lead. Ended up losing the game late.”

Keaton Anthony got the start on the mound and only threw one inning, allowing two hits and two runs.

Zach Voelker threw five innings of relief, allowing one run on five hits and striking out two. Marcus Morgan was tagged with the loss after 1 1/3 innings of work allowing two runs.

“Voelker did a great job of coming in and slowing the game down for us,” said Heller. “Keaton didn’t have a great start and we fall behind, and Zach came in and stabilized the game did a good job.”

Cade Moss was 2-for-4 the only Hawkeye with a multi-hit day. Anthony was 1-for-2 with three walks. Ben Wilmes drew three walks.

“At the end of the day we have to get some things figured out in our bullpen,” said Heller. We have some guys that aren’t going well right now. But there were positives Marcus Morgan came in and did a good job today, Luke Lewellyn came in for the second day in a row, Chas Wheatly did a nice job in the top of the ninth. The free bases did us in, way too many.”

Of Notes

  • Iowa moves to 19-6 on the season and 0-2 in Big Ten play.
  • Dorighi’s home run was his fourth of the year.
  • Maryland left 15 runners stranded compared to Iowa’s nine.
