IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Iowa football team’s tight end room got better on Thursday and tight end coach Abdul Hodge has to be happy to have landed a commitment from 2024 preferred walk on, DJ Vonnahme.
Vonnahme is coming to Iowa from Kuemper Catholic in Carroll. He is listed at 6-foot-4 and 205 pounds and he chose the Hawkeyes over multiple scholarship offers from FBS and FCS schools.
When asked why he chose to walk on at Iowa over full ride offers, Vonnahme said:
“It’s always been a dream to play at Iowa and to get that opportunity it was hard to turn down. Even though it is a PWO for now, I still have the opportunity to get on scholarship and that’s what I intend to work towards.”
Vonnahme excels in multiple sports for Kuemper, and though he is being recruited to play tight end for the Hawkeyes, Vonnahme said he is willing to play wherever they need him.
Iowa special teams coordinator Levar Woods was the primary recruiter for Vonnahme and they started building a relationship during track season this past spring. Their relationship blossomed and that ultimately helped lead to his commitment.
Vonnahme is excited about the what the future holds for him.
“I can’t wait to be a Hawk,” he said.
