Top-ranked Iowa field hockey defeats Michigan 2-0 in Ann Arbor

ANN ARBOR, Michigan — The top-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team shutout No. 14 Michigan, 2-0, in the Hawkeye’s Big Ten opener Friday night at Phyllis Ocker Field Hockey Field. It was Iowa’s seventh shutout of the season, and third against a ranked opponent.
Iowa improves to 9-0 on the season and 4-0 against ranked foes. The Hawkeyes were outshot by Michigan 11-10, and Michigan attempted nine corners to Iowa’s one. The Wolverines had three shots on goal to Iowa’s seven.
Freshman Miranda Jackson’s fired in a goal at the 33rd minute, unassisted, to give the Hawkeyes the lead, after a scoreless first half of play.
Junior Alex Wesneski scored a Hawkeye insurance goal with five minutes left to play, unassisted.
OF NOTE
* No. 1 Iowa recorded its seventh shutout.
* The Hawkeyes entered the weekend leading the country in shutouts per game (.75) and shutouts (6).
* Sophomore Mia Magnotta recorded three saves, bringing her total to 18 on the season.
* The Hawkeyes hold wins over the No. 1, No. 12, No. 14, No. 19 teams this season.
* Jackson scored her fourth goal of the season and Wesneski her third.
* The Hawkeyes lead the nation in goals with 41.
