Top-ranked Iowa field hockey defeats Michigan State 3-1 at Grant Field

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Two first quarter goals lead the top-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team to a 3-1 victory over Michigan State on Sunday afternoon at Grant Field.
Iowa improves to 10-1 on the season and 2-1 in Big Ten play. The Hawkeyes outshot Michigan State 19-7 and had nine shots on goal to the Spartans two.
“Friday was very uncharacteristic of us. We needed to have a rebound game, and we got the outcome today so that was great. There are still things we need to still fix and clean up, but we were able to get some goals on that board, so that’s a positive.”
Senior Alex Wesneski struck first in the sixth minute of the game off an assist from junior Jacey Wittel.
The Spartans tied the game three minutes later with a goal 8:55 into the game from Ellie Rutherford.
Freshman Dionne van Aalsum responded off a penalty corner, giving the Hawkeyes the lead in the 12th minute. She was assisted by junior Annika Herbine and junior Lieve Schalk.
Junior Hillary Cox gave Iowa an insurance goal after a successful penalty stroke in the 41st minute of play.
OF NOTE…
The Hawkeyes have allowed six goals in 11 games this season
Van Aalsum has scored in ten out of 11 games this season, and has 23 goals in the 11 games.
Sophomore Mia Magnotta recorded one save in today’s game, bringing her total to 22 on the season.
