Cyclones dominate Hawkeyes 90-65 in Ames, second double digit loss of the week for Iowa
By Dallas Jones
AMES, IOWA – Just over 24 hours after the Hawkeye women’s hoops team won their Cy-Hawk matchup, the Hawkeye men’s team faced off against the Cyclones. Fran McCaffery and company had won four of the last five matchups in the rivalry, including a 19 point victory in Carver-Hawkeye Arena last December.
The Cyclones got their revenge today in their 25 point domination of the Hawkeyes, the third CyHawk match in a row decided by 19+ points.
1st half: The physically imposing tone of this Iowa State Cyclone team was brought from the first possession.
The Hawkeyes failed to score their first basket inside the three point line until the 10:46 mark in the first half. While the Cyclones put up 12 points in the paint during that same time.
At the end of the half, the Cyclones had an astonishing 30-2 advantage over Iowa in the paint. As well as a 15-1 lead in points off turnovers. They led the Hawkeyes 47-29 at the break.
Payton Sandfort was a lone bright spot for the Hawkeyes in the first half as he scored 14 points on 4/6 from deep.
The Iowa guards had a half to forget as Josh Dix, Dasonte Bowen, and Tony Perkins all picked up two fouls before the break.
Dix got his first start of his career and it did not go well, in four minutes of play he posted two turnovers and fouls, keeping him off the court the rest of the half.
Nine Hawkeyes touch the floor in the first eleven minutes of the game, eleven in the first half as Iowa navigated 12 team fouls.
2nd half: After the slow first half, Fran McCaffery decided to go with a bigger lineup to start the second with Tony Perkins running the point, Payton Sandfort and Patrick McCaffery on the wings, anchored by both Ben Krikke and Owen Freeman down low.
That lineup played just under four minutes together and was outscored 15-6 in that time, stretching the Cyclone lead to 27. Once that lead was reached, the Cyclones never looked back.
The game never came within 20 after that point and stretched all the way to 32 at one point.
At the end of the day, the numbers speak for themselves. A young team got dominated on the road, but there is so much basketball left in the season for the Hawkeyes.
Next up, the Michigan Wolverines Sunday afternoon in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
