Iowa cornerback Jermari Harris announces he will return next season
IOWA CITY, Iowa – One of Iowa’s two starting cornerbacks has decided to return next season.
Junior Jermari Harris announced Wednesday on X, which was formerly known as Twitter, that he will return for his senior season next fall.
The Chicago native has made 18 career starts and played in 32 games overall.
“There’s more to give. See you next fall,” Harris said in his announcement.
Harris missed the first two games this season because of a suspension, and he also missed the entire 2022 season because of an injury.
But when healthy, Harris has shown to be a reliable defender on the perimeter, and a nice complement to All-America cornerback Cooper DeJean, who is also deciding whether he will return for his senior season.
However, DeJean’s situation is different in that he projects as a possible first-round selection in the 2024 NFL draft.
The decision by Harris to return next season comes just a week after Iowa All-Big Ten linebacker Jay Higgins announced that he also plans to return next season. Higgins finished the 2023 season with 171 tackles, which is tied with Andre Jackson for the most in program history.
Iowa still is waiting for fifth-year senior linebacker Nick Jackson and senior free safety Quinn Schulte to decide whether they will return next season.
The Iowa offense received a boost when junior tight end Luke Lachey said he plans to return next season. Lachey suffered a season-ending lower leg injury in the third game against Western Michigan.
The Ohio native was leading the team with 10 catches and 131 receiving yards when he was injured.
Senior tight end Erick All also could return next season, but he has yet to announce his plans. He suffered a season-ending leg injury in the seventh game against Wisconsin.
All was leading the team with 21 catches and 299 receiving yard when he was injured.
He and quarterback Cade McNamara both transferred from Michigan last January.
McNamara also has announced that he plans to return next season after having played in just five game this past season. He suffered a season-ending knee injury against Michigan State in the fifth game.
