Hawkeye Recap podcast: Profile on Bob Stoops and death of Ken Ploen
IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Hawkeye Recap podcast, which is brought to you by former Iowa kicker Brion Hurley, has a profile on former Iowa defensive back and former Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops, and discusses the death of former Iowa quarterback Kenny Ploen.
Ploen passed away on Feb. 13 at the age of 88 in Winnepig, Canada.
He led Iowa to its first Rose Bowl win following the 1956 regular season and he played professionally in Canada.
Ploen played quarterback for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers from 1957 to 1967. He also filled in at halfback and safety. Ploen led his team to six Grey Cup appearances, including four victories in 1958, 1959, 1961 and 1962. In the 49th Grey Cup game (1961), he scored one of the most memorable touchdowns in professional football history, eluding numerous defenders on an eighteen-yard run into the end zone during overtime.
He was voted the 1961 Grey Cup Most Valuable Player, and was selected as a divisional All-Star three times.
Ploen was inducted into the Canadian Football hall of Fame in 1975, the Rose Bowl Fame in 1997, and the Iowa Sports Hall of Fame in 2002.
In 2005, Ploen was named one of the Blue Bombers 20 All-Time Greats.
Ploen and his wife stayed in Winnipeg after he retired and made it their home. He worked as a sales representative and as a color commentator for a local radio station.
