IOWA CITY, Iowa – Fran McCaffery appears headed back to his hometown of Philadelphia to coach at his college alma mater.
McCaffery is expected to be hired as the new men’s basketball coach for the University of Pennsylvania where he was a standout point guard in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
The hiring would come barely two weeks after McCaffery was fired as the Iowa men’s basketball coach after 15 seasons.
Fran McCaffery, who will turn 66 in May, is Iowa’s all-time winningest men’s basketball coach with 297 wins. He also led the Hawkeyes to seven NCAA Tournament appearances.
Iowa is one of four Division I programs that Fran McCaffery has led to the NCAA Tournament, the others being Lehigh, North Carolina-Greensboro and Siena.
Fran McCaffery played his freshman season for Wake Forest before transferring to Penn.
He said on a podcast shortly after being fired that he still wanted to keep coaching.
And now his alma mater will give him that opportunity.
