EAST LANSING, Michigan – The University of Iowa softball team defeated Michigan State on Friday afternoon at Secchia Stadium, 3-1, in the opening game of the three-game series.
Junior Jalen Adams (21-5) got the start and threw her 16th complete game of the season allowing one run on six hits and struck out four. Five different Hawkeyes recorded a hit with senior Hannah Lindsay leading the way going 2-for-3 with a two-run home run.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams had a runner reach in the first inning, but neither team capitalized.
Michigan State was first on the board in the home half of the second, plating a run on an RBI double after a lead off single.
The Hawkeyes answered back immediately in the top of the third. A single from sophomore Devin Simon started off Iowa’s half of the inning and managed to get to third after a sac bunt and a fly out. Redshirt junior Desiree Rivera delivered a double to left field that scored Simon tying the game at one. Adams delivered a shut down inning retiring the Spartans in order in the bottom half.
Freshman Brianna Johnson started the fourth inning with a walk for Iowa. Lindsay then came to the plate and hit a home run to left center to give the Hawkeyes the lead, 3-1. Adams continued taking care of business in the circle, with another three up and three down inning.
Iowa tried to add insurance in the sixth as Lindsay and Avery Jackson reached on singles to open the inning. Michigan State managed to get out of the inning keeping the score 3-1. The Spartans had two runners reach in the home half of the sixth but were unable to bring any runs home as Adams held strong in the circle.
Michigan State threatened in the bottom of the seventh getting two runners in scoring position with two outs, but Adam induced a fly out to end the game.
Iowa finished the game with three runs on six hits and had one error. Michigan State finished the game with one run and six hits.
