IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Iowa wrestling team has landed its first recruit in the 2027 class as New Jersey state champion Sonny Amato announced his commitment to Iowa on Wednesday.
Amato, who is ranked by Flowrestling No. 1 nationally at 150 pounds in the class of 2027, picked Iowa over Iowa State, Oklahoma and Virginia Tech.
Amato won a New Jersey state as a freshman in 2024 at 144 pounds, and then finished third at the same weight as a sophomore this past season with Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School.
Amato is the latest in a growing list of high school wrestlers from New Jersey that have recently picked Iowa; joining Harvey Ludington, Leo DeLuca and Anthony Levezzola, all of whom were in Iowa’s last two recruiting classes.
Amato made his announcement on Instagram.
