IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Iowa football team always needs help at the receiver position, and help is now coming from the transfer portal.
Former UT Rio Grande Valley receiver Tony Diaz has committed to Iowa according to multiple reports.
Diaz just finished a highly productive 2025 season, compiling 67 catches for 881 yards and 11 touchdowns as a freshman.
Those numbers caught the attention of Power 4 programs such as Iowa and now the 5-foot-11 176-pound Diaz is on his way to Iowa City to play for an offense that has struggled to develop playmakers at the receiver position.
Senior Jacob Gill led the Iowa wide receivers in catches (24) and receiving yards (278) this season.
Diaz is the eighth player to commit to Iowa since the portal opened on Jan 2., and the second to commit on Friday, the other being James Madison safety Tyler Brown.
Iowa’s other additions from the portal are former Villanova safety Anthony Hawkins, former James Madison offensive lineman Trent Wilson, former North Dakota State kicker Eli Ozick, former Holy Cross defensive lineman Brice Stevenson, former Elon defensive end Kahmari Brown, and former Northern Illinois defensive end Lance Ingold.
A native of San Marcos, Texas, Diaz picked Iowa over reported scholarship offers from Alabama, Illinois, Oklahoma State, Kentucky, Virginia Tech. Houston, Cincinnati and North Texas.
He has three seasons of eligibility.
