IOWA CITY, Iowa — Sedrick Shaw, the University of Iowa’s all-time leading rusher, will serve as honorary captain for Saturday’s season opener against Northern Illinois, which will kick off at 3:16 p.m. CT on Duke Slater Field inside Kinnick Stadium.

Shaw was previously the honorary captain in 2012 during Iowa’s 31-13 Floyd of Rosedale victory over Minnesota.

Shaw, who lettered for the Hawkeyes from 1993-96, was a first-team All-Big Ten selection and team captain as a senior in 1996. He was also Iowa’s team Most Valuable Player in 1995 and 1996.

The Austin, Texas, native is the only Hawkeye to rush for 1,000+ yards in three consecutive seasons and one of four players to have multiple 1,000-yard campaigns. He holds Iowa’s career records for rushing yards (4,156), rushing touchdowns (33), rushing attempts (837), and career 100-yard games (19).

Shaw closed out his career ranking in the top 10 in program history with 214 points, and he has the second-most all-purpose yards (4,974) all-time. Twice in his career, Shaw eclipsed the 200-yard mark on the ground, rushing for 250 yards at Michigan State in 1995 and 214 yards at Wisconsin in 1995.

During his four years in Iowa City, Shaw led the Hawkeyes to three bowl games and two bowl victories. He was the MVP of Iowa’s 38-18 win over Washington in the 1995 Sun Bowl and the Offensive MVP in the team’s 27-0 victory over Texas Tech in the 1996 Alamo Bowl.

Shaw was selected by the New England Patriots in the third round of the 1997 NFL Draft, playing three professional seasons.

Shaw, who will be inducted into the Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame this weekend, will accompany the Iowa captains to midfield for Saturday’s pregame coin toss. He will also be with the team in the locker room before and after the game.
