Iowa Football Official Moves Zach Ortwerth Closer to Decision
St. Louis TE Checks Out Hawkeyes Again
Zach Ortwerth wrapped up a busy month of official visits with a weekend stop at Iowa Football. The St. Louis (MO) University High tight end previously saw Minnesota, Pittsburgh and Wisconsin.
“I enjoyed getting around the players and seeing what the life of an Iowa football player was like,” Ortwerth told HF. “It was also good to hear about the program through them.”
Rivals ranks Ortwerth (6-5, 220) as a three-star recruit. The scouting service sees him as the No. 22 player overall in Missouri for the 2023 Class.
According to Max Preps, Ortwerth caught 20 passes for 299 yards and five touchdowns, while being credited with eight pancake blocks this past fall. On defense, he racked up 72 tackles (16 for loss) and a pair of sacks to go with four passes defended.
Assistant LeVar Woods recruits St. Louis for Iowa. Abdul Hodge coaches tight ends.
“I spoke with coach Hodge and coach Woods the most this weekend. Coach Hodge talked about developing me and giving me an opportunity to compete,” Ortwerth said.
Ortwerth visited Iowa in January. The Hawkeyes offered him a scholarship shortly after that stop. He returned to campus in the spring, and this weekend’s official advanced his relationship with the Hawkeyes.
“After getting back on campus and being around the players, I feel good about Iowa,” he said.
With four official visits behind him, Ortwerth is going to assess his recruiting process. Decision time could be coming.
“Right now, I’m going to talk to my parents about where we stand and see if we have a school that is best for me,” he said.
