Benjamin honors teammate with huge night
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Sometimes, intentionally or not, things just work out perfectly.
That was the case in what turned out to be a very special Friday night for four-star running back and Iowa commit Eno Benjamin.
The Wylie, Texas native accounted for all eight of Wylie East’s touchdowns while wearing jersey No. 8 in honor injured teammate and fellow senior Lorenzo Credit.
Benjamin carried 24 times for 314 yards and six touchdowns during a 56-28 victory over North Forney High School. He also passed for 147 passing yards and two touchdowns.
Benjamin normally wears No. 5, but switched to honor his injured teammate and friend.
Credit is more than just a teammate to Benjamin. He is the inspiration for the way in which Benjamin carries himself in practice and during games.
Benjamin felt that he needed to repay Credit in some way for his impact.
"He’s the one who really taught me that you don’t need to talk to get work done in practice and show that you’re a tough player," Benjamin said. "He impacted my life in a small amount of time, and so I thought this was the smallest thing I could do for him and I owed it to him."
Credit tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee early in the season. His high school career as a linebacker came to a screeching halt.
Benjamin didn’t set out to score eight touchdowns, nor did he even realize that he had until later that night.
"It was not a plan to score eight times," Benjamin said. "It made the night that much better. I didn’t find out until we were back at the school."
Benjamin thinks Credit was poised to have a breakout season as a senior linebacker before the injury occurred.
"In my opinion our best defensive player tore his ACL and is done for the season," Benjamin said. "He had a great season last year and I knew he would blow up this year if not for the injury."
With his performance on Friday, Benjamin now has 808 yards rushing on 94 carries and 12 touchdowns in four games.
He also has completed 18-of-34 passes for 318 yards and four touchdowns.
Benjamin is one of 17 players committed to Iowa’s 2017 recruiting class, and one of six from Texas in the class.
