Report: Connor McCaffery expected to play basketball this season
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Connor McCaffery apparently has changed plans for his freshman season at Iowa.
Jon Rothstein from CBS Sports posted on Twitter on Monday that Connor is expected to play basketball this season and not redshirt as previously planned, with an official announcement coming on Tuesday.
Rothstein attributed his information to Iowa coach Fran McCaffery, who is also Connor McCaffery's father.
Rothstein interviewed Fran McCaffery on Monday at noon, according to Matt Weitzel from the Iowa Sports Information Department.
However, Weitzel said no official decision on Connor McCaffery's playing status has been made at this point and probablty would not be made until Tuesday.
Connor McCaffery, a 6-foot-5 guard, originally wanted to redshirt in basketball in order to focus his attention on his freshman season with the Iowa baseball team.
But he had to reconsider that plan after junior point guard Christain Williams announced last Thursday that he would transfer from Iowa after the first semester. Williams was expected to be Jordan Bohannon's backup at point guard this season.
It is unclear at this stage what Connor McCaffery plans to do for his freshman season in baseball, considering the two sports overlap in February and March.
Connor is expected to meet with Iowa baseball coach Rick Heller on Tuesday before making a final decision.
Connor McCaffery was an all-state outfielder for Iowa City West High School, and also plays first base.
