AH TV: Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz meets with the media on Monday in Des Moines
DES MOINES, Iowa – Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz met with the media on Monday before attending an I-Club event at Wakonda Golf Course.
Ferentz addressed several topics, including the recent addition of junior college running back Mekhi Sargent, who is now enrolled at the University of Iowa. Sargent attended Iowa Western Community College, where he rushed for over 1,400 yards last season.
Ferenz told reporters that his coaching staff had been recruiting Sargent for a while and liked what they saw.
Sargent will have three seasons of eligibility at Iowa.
Ferentz spoke in favor of the NCAA's new rule that will allow freshmen to play in up to four games without it costing a season of eligibility.
He also updated the progress of his team, which is currently participating in summer workouts under the direction of strength and conditioning coach Chris Doyle.
Ferentz is prohibited from talking publicly about specific recruits under NCAA rules, so he did not address the news that Iowa reportedly cancelled the visit of 4-star running back Jirehl Brock, which was scheduled for this coming Friday.
Iowa will face Northern Illinois in the season opener on Sept. 1 at Kinnick Stadium.
