IOWA CITY, Iowa – What started as a festive Sunday at Duane Banks Field ended in disappointment as the Iowa baseball team fell to Michigan State 7-5.

Iowa led 4-1 heading into the seventh inning, but the Spartans drove home five runs in their half of the seventh to take the lead for good.

Iowa had a chance in the ninth inning with runners on second and third, but junior catcher Austin Martin flew out to center field to end the game.

The loss snapped Iowa's streak of six straight series wins and almost guarantees it will have to win the Big Ten Tournament to make it's third appearance in the NCAA Tournament in six years under head coach Rick Heller.

The Hawkeyes had previously climbed into the Division I baseball rankings and were projected to make an NCAA Tournament appearance.

Iowa fell to 12-9 in Big Ten play and 30-19 overall on the season.
