IOWA CITY, Iowa – Sophomore forward Jack Nunge and the three new members of the Iowa men's basketball team all met with the media on Wednesday afternoon.

The 6-foot-11 Nunge talked about the progress he made while being redshirted last season, while newcomers Patrick McCaffery, Joe Toussaint and Bakari Evelyn talked about starting a new chapter in their lives.

Nunge now weighs over 250 pounds and has worked hard over the past year to improve his strength. The Indiana native appeared in all 33 games as a true feshman during the 2017-18 season and averaged 5.7 points and 2.8 rebounds per game.

Patrick McCaffery is a 6-8 incoming freshman and the son of Iowa coach Fran McCaffery. Patrick is the all-time leading scorer for Iowa City West High School where he scored more than 1,500 points during his celebrated career.

He is expected to help Iowa mostly at the small forward position.

The 5-10 Toussaint, who is from New York City, is also an incoming freshman and will compete for playing time at point guard where his quickness and ability to defend should benefit him and the team. Especially if senior point guard Jordan Bohannon doesn't play this coming season due to health reasons.

Bohannon had surgery on his hip in late May and it typically takes at least five months to recover from his type of surgery.

Evelyn was the final piece to the current roster as he signed a letter of intent with Iowa a few weeks ago. He has one season to play as a graduate transfer and will provide depth in the backcourt as a 6-2 combo guard.

Evelyn grew up near Detroit and played the last two seasons for Valparaiso after having started his career at Nebraska.

Iowa is coming off a season in which it won 23 games and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

However, the roster has changed substantially since the end of the season with three players having moved on with eligibility remaining, including starters Tyler Cook and Isaiah Moss. The 6-9 Cook skipped his senior season to enter the 2019 NBA Draft where he went undrafted, while the 6-5 Moss will play for Kansas next season as a graduate student.

Reserve guard Maishe Dailey also has transferred to Akron for his final season, while forward Nicholas Baer has used up his eligibility.

So with all of those roster changes, it is reasonable to think that at least two or three of the players interviewed on Wednesday will have to play significant roles this coming season in order for Iowa to be successful.

Assuming Bohannon doesn't play this season, Iowa will be without three starters from last season and its top reserve off the bench.

There should be plenty of opportunities for the four players interviewed on Wednesday to make key contributions this coming season.
