Iowa senior Jaylan McConico named Big Ten Men’s Track Athlete of the Year
ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference announced the 2021 Big Ten Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field postseason award recipients on Wednesday as selected by the conference’s head coaches.
Iowa senior Jaylan McConico was named Men’s Track Athlete of the Year, while Michigan junior Ayden Owens was selected as the Field Athlete of the Year and Minnesota’s Kostas Zaltos was named Freshman of the Year.
Ohio State senior Anavia Battle was selected as the Women’s Track Athlete of the Year, while Ohio State senior Adelaide Aquilla claimed Field Athlete of the Year honors and Illinois’ Olivia Howell was named Freshman of the Year.
McConico finished as the runner-up with a time of 13.38 in the 110-meter hurdles at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon last week. Owens earned silver in the decathlon at the NCAA Championships posting 8,114 points. Zaltos secured a third-place finish in the men’s hammer throw in his NCAA Championships debut for the Maroon & Gold with a career-best mark of 71.21m (233-07 ft).
Battle scored six team points for the Buckeyes at the NCAA Championships by placing third in the 200 meters with a time of 22.42. Aquilla won the NCAA championship in the shot put with a final throw of 18.98m/62-3 ¼, matching her indoor national championship and giving her a clean sweep of four championships (indoors and outdoors) in the shot put at the Big Ten and NCAA championships. Howell finished 10th in the women’s 1500-meter final with a time of 4:15.56 at the NCAA Championships.
Last month, the Big Ten announced the award recipients for Track Athlete of the Championships, Field Athlete of the Championships and Coach of the Year, as well as the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honorees. These individual award recipients are listed below along with Wednesday’s selections.
