Broderick Binns leaves Iowa athletics after leading diversity, equity and inclusion efforts
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Broderick Binns has resigned from his position as Iowa’s assistant athletics director for diversity, equity and inclusion after having accepted a new job outside of the university.
The University of Iowa made the announcement on Tuesday.
Binns, a former Iowa defensive end, has been the executive director for DEI since 2019, first in an interim role and than permanently.
He previously worked in the athletic department as director of player development for the Iowa football program in 2016 and as a graduate assistant in 2014 and 2015.
“I want to thank Broderick for his leadership and wish he and his family all the best in their next chapter,” Iowa Athletic Director Gary Barta said in a release. “Fortunately, he is remaining in the community and has expressed interest in staying engaged with our student-athletes and coaches.”
A native of St. Paul, Minnesota, Binns played at Iowa from 2008-11 and he made second-team All-Big Ten as a senior in 2011. He also started 31 games as a Hawkeye.
Former Iowa fullback and Waterloo native Lew Montgomery will lead the athletic department’s DEI efforts on an interim basis, according to the news release, while the athletic department begins its search for Binns’ replacement.
