Hawk Fanatic podcast: Rob Houghtlin looks back at his legendary career as Iowa kicker
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Say the name Rob Houghtlin to an Iowa football fan and they would probably immediately think back to that milestone moment on Oct. 19, 1985 at Kinnick Stadium.
That’s the day Houghtlin became a Hawkeye legend by making a 29-year field goal as time expired to lift No. 1 Iowa over No. 2 Michigan 12-10 in a game that ranks as one of the most memorable in program history.

Iowa would go on to win the Big Ten title and 10 games overall that season.
Houghtlin would go on to become one of the greatest clutch kickers in program history as he also made a 41-yard field goal in the final seconds to win the 1986 Holiday Bowl, along with game-winning field goals against Purdue and Minnesota.
Houghtlin was the guest on Friday’s episide of the Hawkeye Fanatic radio show and podcast and he spent about 40 minutes reminiscing about his career.
He spoke in great detail about the moments leading up to his field goal that defeated Michigan, and about how he sang the Iowa fight song to help stay calm on the sideline as the Iowa offense marched down the field, and about the wild celebration that occurred on the field afterwards.
Houghtlin spent one semester at Miami (Ohio) as a freshman before transferring to Iowa where he joined the football team as a walk-on. He was initially cut from the team, but was invited back after winning an intramural field-goal kicking contest.
The 57-year Houghtlin also shared his thoughts on the emergence of Iowa freshman kicker Drew Stevens, who has made all four of his field-goal attempts heading into Saturday’s game at Illinois, and on what it was like to kick for Hayden Fry.
Houghtlin grew up in suburban Chicago and currently lives in Atlanta after having lived in Michigan for 27 years.
We really enjoyed catching up with Houghtlin and think you will also enjoy listening to him reflect on his time as a Hawkeye.
