Ismael Smith Flores Recaps Iowa Official Visit
Legacy Recruit Feeling Good About Hawkeyes
Ismael Smith Flores’ Iowa official visit this weekend was a walk down memory lane for his parents. Decades ago, Leroy Smith and Laura Flores attended the university, Leroy setting the Hawkeyes’ single-season sack record in 1991.
“It was amazing to be able to visit with my dad,” Ismael told HF. “The whole time him and my mom were reminiscing on the times when they were going to this school. He had a great time. He got to run into a lot of his old friends and coaches and chop it up with them again.”
Iowa offered Ismael a scholarship this month. Michigan State also offered recently.
The Hawkeyes have history on their side. Former Iowa and NFL receiver Danan Hughes, Leroy’s college teammate, is Ismael’s Godfather.
“I’m loving Iowa. The environment there was great,” he said.
Through his first six games this season, Smith Flores caught 10 passes for 294 yards and two touchdowns, according to MaxPreps.com. He’s also rushed one time for 28 yards. He’s broken out out on the gridiron this season after standing out for his basketball skills.
With the recent uptick in his recruitment, Smith Flores is taking it all in. Iowa is well positioned after showing him a good time this weekend.
“The thing I liked most was being able to meet all the coaches in person. I could tell they were good people over the phone but when you get to meet them in person you really get to see how genuine they all are,” he said.
