IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Iowa football team has added one quarterback from the transfer portal in Cade McNamara, but now has also lost two quarterbacks to the portal as freshman Carson May has reportedly entered the portal.

May, who is from Jones, Oklahoma, joins former Iowa quarterback Alex Padilla in the portal, and May leaves Iowa after just one season in which he didn’t appear in a game.

Redshirt freshman Joe Labas played all but one series at quarterback in the 21-0 victory over Kentucky in the Music City Bowl this past Saturday in Nashville, Tennessee.

Senior tight end Sam LaPorta took three snaps behind center in the one series in which Labas didn’t play in the Music City Bowl.

Iowa senior quarterback Spencer Petras has played his final game as a Hawkeye, but he will stick around this spring to recover from a shoulder injury that casued him to miss the Music City Bowl, and to help McNamara learn the offense.

McNamara announed on Dec. 1 that he would transfer to Iowa after having spent three seasons at Michigan. He led the Wolverines to the 2021 Big Ten title and to the college playoff.

Assuming Labas stays at Iowa, there will be at least three quarterbacks on scholarship next season as New Jersey native Marco Lainez is part of the incoming 2023 recruiting class.

Iowa also has a verbal commitment from 2024 quarterback and Florida native James Resar.
