IOWA CITY, Iowa – The 2024-25 Horizon League Player of the Year has signed a scholarship agreement with the Iowa men’s basketball team.
Alvaro Folgueiras, a 6-foot-9 forward from Robert Morris, is the ninth player to pick Iowa since Ben McCollum was hired as the Iowa head coach last month.
A native of Malaga, Spain, Folgueiras averaged 14.1 points, 9.1 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.2 blocks this past season. He also shot 54.8 percent from the field and 41.3 percent from 3-point range.
“Alvaro is an extremely versatile player,” Iowa head coach Ben McCollum said in a release. “He shoots at a high clip, is super competitive and has won…we value winning. On top of that is his ability to pass the ball and trigger offense, which is what we needed. We’re excited Alvaro is a Hawkeye.”
Robert Morris finished 26-9 this past season and lost to Alabama 90-81 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Folgueiras picked Iowa over Villanova and Providence after having visited all three schools.
He played two seasons for Robert Morris and has two seasons of eligibility.
Prior to attending Robert Morris, Folgueiras attended DME Academy in Daytona Beach, Florida.
Former Iowa star forwards and twin brothers Keegan Murray and Kris Murray also attended DME Academy for one year before enrolling at Iowa.
