IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa softball team shutout Drake on Wednesday evening at Bob Pearl Field, 4-0.
Freshman Talia Tretton (9-8) got the start in the circle and threw five and 2/3 innings. Tretton surrendered five hits and fanned five. Junior Jalen Adams picked up the save throwing the final one and 1/3, fanning two Bulldogs. Sophomore Soo-Jin Berry went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and redshirt junior Desiree Rivera went 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first four innings of play was a pitchers duel with no runs and limited base runners for both teams. Tretton was able to keep the Bulldogs quiet through the first three innings, picking up three strikeouts. The Hawkeyes had a runner reach base in each of the first four innings, but were unable to string anything together to get on the board. Drake had their best scoring opportunity in the fourth loading the bases with one out. Tretton got an out at home and ground out to second base to end the threat.
In the home half of the fifth, Iowa scored all four of its runs on back-to-back RBI doubles to left center from Rivera and Berry. Rivera’s double came when bases were loaded, scoring freshman Arlette Caravaca and Jena Young giving Iowa the lead, 2-0. Berry followed suit with a double of her own scoring two more for Iowa pushing the lead to four.
With two runners on and two outs in the sixth Adams entered in relief striking out the first batter she faced to leave two stranded. Adams retired the Bulldogs in order in the seventh to secure the win.
Iowa finished the game with four runs on five hits. Drake finished the game with no runs and five hits.
