Evan Mitchell Bonding with Hawkeyes
In-State '28 Visits Iowa Again
Evan Mitchell has been a regular visitor to Iowa’s campus. The Class of 2028 in-state offensive lineman’s latest stop happened late this season.
The Hawkeyes battled Top 10 Oregon tough for four quarters before falling, 18-16. Sold out Kinnick Stadium was rocking.
The efficiency of Iowa in hosting prospects caught Mitchell’s attention.
“What stood out most about the Iowa visit was how intentional everything felt. From the way the coaches interacted with me to the overall atmosphere around the program, it was clear that they value development, discipline and doing things the right way,” he said.
Mitchell (6-3, 245) started at guard as a freshman during West Des Moines Dowling Catholic’s run to the state semifinals last year. He was back there and a year better in 2025, when the Maroons won the Class 5A championship.
The Hawkeyes had him at camp during the summer of 2024, brought him back for a pair of games last year, played host to him for a junior day and a practice last spring, and then had him in for the Oregon contest.
“Iowa said they wanted me back for a game so I could experience the full game-day environment and see how everything comes together on Saturdays. While I was there, they talked to me about the importance of development over time. They emphasized earning everything, being consistent, and focusing on growth both on and off the field,” he said.
With all the opportunities to be around the Hawkeyes, Mitchell has gained an appreciation for what they offer student-athletes.
“I really like Iowa’s culture, the way they develop players, and how honest and straightforward everyone I’ve spoken with representing Iowa. I also like how much pride there is in the program and how the players are held to a high standard. It feels like a place where you’re pushed to be your best, not just as a football player, but as a person,” he said.
Nebraska and Iowa State played host to Mitchell late this season, too. Other programs have shown interest in him.
“Things are going well with Nebraska and Iowa State. Both programs have been great to visit and easy to communicate with, and I’ve enjoyed getting to know their staffs and learning more about what they have to offer. I’m still early in the process and keeping my options open. I plan to check out junior days and continue building relationships with coaches,” he said.
Mitchell was pleased with his sophomore season but understands development is ongoing. He gained value in watching film and become a better overall student of the game.
An excellent athlete as an offensive lineman, Mitchell is part of the Dowling varsity basketball rotation this winter. The unbeaten Maroons are ranked third in Class 4A. After the campaign wraps up, he’ll lock back in to football development.
“For the offseason, my main goals are to get stronger and faster while gaining weight. I also want to improve my consistency, especially with technique and football IQ. Ultimately, I’m aiming to be more explosive and dependable every time I step on the field,” he said.
