IOWA CITY, Iowa – Ben McCollum’s search for help in the backcourt has produced some results as former Illinois State guard Ty’Reek Coleman announced his commitment to Iowa on Friday.
Coleman, a 6-foot-2, 175-pound native of Aurora, Illinois, averaged 10.0 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game as a freshman for Illinois State this past season.
He also shot 50. 4 precent from the field, and 41.6 percent from 3-point range.
McCollum led Iowa to the NCAA Elite Eight in his first season as head coach, but he now faces the daunting task of having to replace All-Big Ten point guard Bennett Stirtz, who exhausted his eligibility this past season.
Coleman has three seasons of eligibility.
He will be among three newcomers on Iowa’s 2026-27 roster, along with high school seniors Jaidyn Coon, a 6-6 wing player from Storm Lake, and Ethan Harris, a 6-9 forward from Camas, Washington.
McCollum also wants to add a post player from the transfer portal.
Iowa hosted former Saint Mary’s center Andrew McKeever, who is listed at 7-3, on a visit last Sunday.
