No. 6 Iowa field hockeye defeats No. 15 Michigan 2-1 in overtime

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The sixth-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team earned a 2-1 overtime victory over No. 15 Michigan on Friday afternoon at Ocker Field behind a golden goal from Fréderique van Cleef.
“That was a hard-fought Big Ten win against a fantastic Michigan team,” head coach Lisa Cellucci said. “The Hawks showed unbelievable resilience, and I was really proud of our energy, communication and problem-solving.”
Dionne van Aalsum opened the scoring for the Hawkeyes (10-1, 2-1) at the 17:51 mark of the second quarter, converting on an assist from van Cleef to give Iowa a 1-0 lead.
Michigan (5-4, 1-2) answered late in the fourth quarter when Natalie Millman scored off an assist from Milaw Clause at the 53:17 mark to force overtime.
In the extra period, van Cleef secured the victory for Iowa at the 70:33 mark, scoring off an assist from van Aalsum to notch her 15th goal of the season and lift the Hawkeyes to the 2-1 win.
Goalkeeper Julia Claessens made six saves to anchor the Hawkeye defense and improve to 3-0 this season.

– Van Cleef’s game-winning goal was her 15th of the season.
– Van Aalsum recorded her 12th goal and 2nd assist of the season.
– Claessens improved to 3-0 in goal for the Hawkeyes.
