FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – University of Iowa track and field closed out competition at the Razorback Invitational on Saturday with a record-breaking performance from junior Peyton Haack.

Haack, a Westfield, Indiana, native earned 6,007 points in the heptathlon on his way to the new school record. At the time of the event’s completion, he was ranked first in the NCAA. His day began with the 60-meter hurdles, where Haack breezed past the competition to win the title in 7.95. Next, he tied for first in pole vault with a mark of 5 meters (16’ 4.75”), placing him sixth overall in Iowa history. The final leg of the event was the 1,000-meter race, where the multi-event specialist finished with a time of 2:49.83. Overall, Haack finished second in the heptathlon.

“It was a two-day war, a two-day battle. I’m really proud of those guys,” Coach Woody said. “For Peyton, coming back off of injury from last year and to open up with a school record and getting over that 6,000 point mark, that’s just tremendous.”

Fellow junior Austin West compiled a heptathlon score of 5,861 to set a new personal best and improve his second all-time standing on the Hawkeyes top-10 list. West coasted to the title in the 1,000-meter race, speeding to a time of 2:35.43.

“I was really pleased with Austin, breaking his previous school record,” Woody said. “He’s in a really good spot going into the end of indoor season.”

In the men’s triple jump, senior James Carter used a new best 16.14 meter (52’ 11.50”) mark to climb the Hawkeye record books. Carter now ranks second in Iowa history, just three tenths of a meter off of the school record held by Troy Doris (16.46 meters).

“James had an unbelievable meet,” Woody said. “This is one of the best meets ever for a jumper in Iowa history. Look at where he ranks in the long jump and now the triple jump, and he’s still not even touching the boards on those marks.”

The 4×400-meter relays were highlighted by the women’s quartet of junior Ali Dorn, junior Paige Magee, freshman Audrey Biermann and redshirt freshman Chloe Larsen, who set a season-best time of 3:34.06 to climb to fourth in school history.

Biermann also made her mark by joining the record books in the women’s 400-meter event. Biermann’s personal record time of 53.87 positions her seventh all-time in Hawkeye history.

Junior sprinter Kalen Walker opened his season with an impressive men’s 60-meter dash performance. Walker qualified for the finals with a time of 6.73, before improving his mark to finish fourth overall (6.67).

Senior LaSarah Hargrove sprinted her way through the prelims to qualify for the finals of the women’s 60-meter dash. Hargrove finished fifth overall, crossing the line in 7.38.

In the women’s weight throw, senior Jamie Kofron turned in a solid performance for the Hawkeyes against a loaded field, placing fourth overall with a toss of 19.84 meters (65’ 1.75”).

“This week went really well, it was a good test for us,” assistant coach Ray Robinson said of the throws group. “The athletes competed really well. Yesterday, Wisdom Williams breaking the 50-foot barrier for the first time ever in the shot put was really impressive. In the women’s weight throw, Jamie (Kofron) had the second-best meet of her career.

Senior Jordan Johnson was the lone Hawkeye in the men’s weight throw, where he also finished fourth behind a mark of 19.70 meters (64’ 7.75”). “To have JoJo (Johnson) finish fourth in this field behind a consistent series, it was a good day overall and a step in the right direction,” Coach Robinson said.

The Hawkeyes will split and travel to the Meyo Invitational in South Bend, Indiana, the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa, and the New Mexico Collegiate Classic in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on Feb. 3-4.
