Mike and Patty Street reflect on their son’s legacy 30 years later on Chris Street Night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena
IOWA CITY, Iowa – The memory and legacy Chris Street was honored at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Tuesday as part of Iowa’s matchup against Northwestern.
Street was killed in an automobile accident on Jan. 19 1993, and midway through his junior season on the Iowa men’s basketball team.
Street’s parents, Mike and Patty Stree, met with the media prioro to tip-off of Tuesday’s game and emotions ran high as they talked about their only son, who was emerging as a star as a 6-foot-8 power forward.
The Big Ten Network also honored Chris Street by airing a documentary about his life that aired on Jan. 18 for the first time.
The Iowa-Northwestern game was originally scheduled for Jan. 18, but was postponed due to Covid-19 related health concerns within the Northwestern program.
Northwestern coach Chris Collins was hosted by Chris Stree on his recruiting visit to Iowa 30 years, and Collins seriously considered Iowa before ultimately signing with Duke.
He and Street remained close friends. His family sat down with media to talk about the night and the documentary before tip-off.
