IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa baseball team defeated Grand View, 12-1, on Wednesday evening at Duane Banks Field.

The Hawkeyes improved to 6-0 at home on the season, and 16-3 overall.

“Very pleased with how we went about our business today,” said head coach Rick Heller. “We had good energy from the time we came out for BP. I thought we hit a lot of balls hard in the first four innings. Didn’t have a whole lot to show for it but we were barreling some balls. Scored two early to give the pitchers some insurance. Tight ballgame for the first four innings then we were able to break it open and take advantage of some of the walks and free bases they gave us.”

Keaton Anthony got the start and the win, throwing two innings in a game that saw 10 different pitchers throw for the Hawkeyes by design.

“Really happy with our pitching staff,” said Heller. “Lot of guys threw, and for the most part other than a blip here or there, almost all of them came in and pounded the strike zone. Got a lot of guys in the game that hadn’t been out there in a while, and I thought they handled themselves well.”

Four different Hawkeyes had multi-hit games. Michael Seegers was 2-for-3 also drawing three walks, Brennen Dorighi was 2-for-2 with three runs scored, Keaton Anthony was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and Raider Tello was 3-for-6 on the day.

The Hawkeyes scored two in the first, four in the fifth, three in the sixth, one in the seventh, and two in the eighth.

Of Note

  • The Hawkeyes are off to their best start since 1939. They have started 16-3 twice (1936 & 1939) and 17-3 once (1939). The 1939 season was the best start in program history, starting 18-3 and finishing 19-5 on the season.
  • Iowa has scored 10 or more runs in eight games this season. The Hawkeyes have scored 156 runs this year.
  • The Hawkeyes are 8-0 when scoring in the first inning and are 14-0 when holding their opponents to five or fewer runs.
